What is OCD?

Obsessive=compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder that causes recurring, intrusive thoughts, images and feelings known as obsessions. Typically, these experiences lead to repetitive behaviors meant to self-soothe. These tic-like behaviors are difficult to control and have a tendency to increase over time. They are known as compulsions.

Obsessions: Unwanted, distress provoking thoughts, impulses, and fears.

Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental rituals that people feel compelled to complete to rid themselves of the obsession

Something that's interesting about OCD is that most people suffering through this type of anguish typically report that they know their obsessions and compulsions are irrational, and yet they struggle to get it under control. Many people with OCD-like symptoms may spend hours or even days stuck in a loop of anxiety, persistent cyclical negative thoughts and repetitive behaviors. They find themselves hindered or even unable to perform and complete daily tasks such as work, parenting or school.

Treatment for those with OCD

The recommended natural treatment to curb OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP). Sometimes a combination of therapy and medication is most helpful but not always. The most important thing to understand is that there are specific strategies to help diminish the symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder and typically what most people do in response to their own OCD makes it worse and intensifies the cycle.

At MorMindful Therapy & Psychiatry we have therapists well trained to help you get your life back under control or help your loved one who is stuck in daily loops. Call us today and ask about our 6-session outpatient program for OCD with Dr. Blair Mor and  Lindsay Cooke, LMHC.
